A recent project completed was the changeover of an apple cold store to a glue curing store on timber beams.
Initially the defrost elements were used to maintain the store at 30 deg C. The cost of operating this system was in the order of $54 per day.
The system was modified using the existing refrigeration system to operate as a heat pump. This involved changing around components of the system, and changing the control system, as well as the refrigerant.
Upon completion of the project the same system which was used to maintain the store and 0 deg C was now able to heat the store to 48 deg C.
The cost of maintaining the store at 30 deg C using the system is now in the order of $18 per day.
Drain water heat recovery system
Recent developments have been made by Enpro to develop and manufacture drain water heat recovery systems
The first and most obvious system developed was a shower drain water heat recovery unit. This is not new technology, however, there are very few of such systems commercially available
The unit recovers the heat from the shower drain water, and preheats the cold water to the shower mixer.
The unit heats the cold water 10-15 deg C at normal shower flow. Therefore the hot water required for the shower is significatly reduced.
The potential savings from the drain water heat revovery unit for an average family is in the order of $150 per year.
